Plantar Hyperhidrosis – Is There a Cure For Sweaty Feet?

By Dr. Jim Greene

The main function of the five million sweat glands in our bodies is to keep the body temperature normal and moisturize our skin. When our bodies get heated due to exercise or rising external temperature during summer, we perspire. Sweat runs down our faces in rivulets. Our hands and feet perspire, making us self-conscious and shy. If there is too much sweating it is called hyperhidrosis. Some people sweat due to nervousness, tension, illness, worry or any other emotional reason or physical one. Our hands and feet sweat, our armpits sweat and stain our dresses and our faces perspire making us look hot and bothered. Socially it causes discomfort as people star and may make comments or laugh behind the person’s back.

No one really knows why we sweat profusely and abnormally at times. Growing up boys and girls perspire during adolescence and it may be hormone related or sheer nervousness. This type of hyperhidrosis gets cured as we age. But if we sweat a lot, which causes social embarrassment, and if it is really a bothersome thing, then it is best to consult a doctor. Sweating of hands may result in the person not being able to shake hands with a new person or anyone else. Sweating of armpits may give out a nasty odor. Sweating of the face may ruin the make up of ladies and may make the sweating person look haggard and nervous. It is really very awful to have hot, shiny and wet faces when we go out in public.

When the feet sweat and become moist and wet, the condition is called plantar hyperhidrosis. The feet become clammy and cold, the socks get wet and begin smelling and the feet lose their grip. It is also called clubfeet. While driving, if a person’s hands and feet start sweating it may be difficult for him to control the vehicle resulting in accidents. Relaxation techniques, yoga, meditation, keeping healthy and fit are some of the non-medical cures for hyperhidrosis.

Most people do not take hyperhidrosis seriously. As there is no known cause to call it a disease, there is no real remedy. But if the hyperhidrosis becomes a bit too much, then the person should seek medical help and intervention. Medicines may be prescribed, or surgery may be suggested. The excessive sweat glands may be cut off or clamped (so that the operation becomes reversible if needed later on) and the problem is solved.
