Hyperhidrosis Cure – Is There a Cure for Hyperhidrosis?

By Dr. Jim Greene

There are some people who are so affected by sweating too much that it undermines their self confidence and affects their quality of life, and their social activities. Often perspiration is a result of emotional state. Tension, anxiety, fear, nervousness and other such emotions may result in a person sweating profusely. Or it may be age related. Adolescent children normally perspire a lot. This may be due to their emotional conditions or their hormones.

It is difficult to say what causes hyperhidrosis or the condition of too much perspiration on our bodies. Some say that our nervous system is responsible for this condition while others say that our brains are the cause for it. Some even go to great lengths to say that it is mentally induced or hereditary.

Appearing for a test or exam, meeting a person for the first time, giving a speech, appearing for an interview, all these situations and several others result in over sweating, giving the person a nervous look. His hands and feet may sweat making them wet and clammy and slippery, faces perspire causing the person to look as if he is crying, or making the make up run down the cheeks. Or the armpits and underarms may start sweat staining the dress and releasing a foul odor, which makes the person self-conscious.

There are five million sweat glands in our bodies, which are responsible for our sweating and perspiring. Their duty is to keep the body temperature stable and the skin soft and moist. Sometimes they go haywire resulting is hyperhidrosis.

As hyperhidrosis is a condition and not a disease, it is difficult to suggest a cure for it. However yoga, meditation relaxation practices and other such non-medical treatments may be done. Or using talcum powder on the perspiring area, which dries up the sweat, or just wiping off the extra sweat may be the answer in many cases. Others may just ignore it till it reaches unbearable lengths. Most people take no notice of excessive sweating or perspiration as they want to just shrug it off as ‘one of those things’.

If the condition worsens, doctors may be consulted. They may prescribe medicines for hyperhidrosis or even surgery where the glands may be cut off or clipped. There may not be a permanent cure but the condition can be lessened and improved with the above-mentioned techniques.
